HBO’s ‘Huracán’ Director, Writer and Star Talks Mental Health and MMA

Film festivals always have that one MVP who makes it big. Cassius Corrigan took that title at the 2019 New York Latino Film Festival as the writer, director and star of “Huracán,” a film about an MMA fighter who suffers from Multiple Personality Disorder. HBO acquired the film through their sponsorship of the film festival made it available on their platforms on Sept. 11. Bold Life’s Zayna Allen sat down with the filmmaker to discuss his work on this groundbreaking project.

All about “Huracán

Huracán” is a psychological thriller about an aspiring mixed martial arts fighter who is battling Multiple Personality Disorder. The film is set in the “real” Miami. Corrigan considers the real Miami to be the “neighborhoods that you’ve never seen on screen before,” neighborhoods such as Little Haiti, Pequeño Havana and Overtown.

Why choose Multiple Personality Disorder?

“We hoped ‘Huracán’ — you know, if we did a great job on it and executed it on a high level, would have an impact,” the filmmaker said. While Corrigan was writing the script, his father, who is a judge for the Miami-Dade juvenile court, had him work closely with the mental health courthouse, the prison diversion program and the court-appointed therapist Judy Pasos. Pasos introduced him to a form of therapy that she considers revolutionary to the way therapists can treat trauma patients. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. For more on “Huracán” click here.
