STARZ’s new hour-long drama series “P-Valley” takes viewers into the lifestyle of strip club culture in the Mississippi Delta. Skyler Joy plays Gidget, a fearless stripper who loves the art of pole dancing and sees it as a competitive sport. Joy joined Bold Life to discuss preparing for the role and what she learned in the process.
Preparing for the Role with Pole Dancing
Pole dancing has seen a rise in mainstream media recently. The movie “Hustlers” was one of the most popular films in 2019, and Jennifer Lopez’s pole dancing scene had everybody talking for months! This activity requires a ton of strength, which is why it has become a new popular way to workout. There are several pole-dancing studios across the U.S. that hold beginner classes. While the local pole-dancing classes last an hour, the dance rehearsals for P-Valley lasted between four and five hours, and Joy remembers coming home with bruises and calluses. “It was intense, but it was also a lot of fun,” she said. By the end of episode 8, Joy noticed an improvement in her overall strength.
Why These Stories Are Important
“P-Valley” explores the different, complex employees and customers that frequent the strip club known as The Pynk. The characters are very raw. They are dealing with complicated families, financial problems and domestic violence just to say to least. Joy says these characters can be relatable to viewers at home. “Everybody does deserve to have their story told,” Joy said. Playing a role as a stripper means coming out of your comfort zone and getting in touch with your sexuality, and that’s exactly what Joy had to do. When she was younger, Joy struggled with the shame around feeling sexy. Playing Gidget was therapeutic and helped her break out of her shell.
