These Major Corporations Are Making Zero-Carbon Pledges

The current climate of the world is becoming more and more evident as time goes on. NASA’s Global Climate Change team states that “the current warming trend is of particular significance because most of it is extremely likely to be the result of human activity since the mid-20th century.” What does this mean for you? For starters, it means that we all need to be more environmentally cautious, but it is not all on us. Companies such as Apple and Walmart are promising their customers to become more environmentally sustainable. Although this is a great start, it is a little too late. Host Philip Michael sits down with Richard Steel, author of Elevated Economics, to discuss the details.

What is Walmart promising?

Toward the end of September, New York City held its annual Climate Week. Corporations, businesses, workers and everyone in between come together to make pledges and learn lessons about sustainability. Walmart, along with several other companies, decided to make zero-carbon pledges that week. However, Walmart took it a step further by declaring itself as a “regenerative company.” They even plan to be emissions-free by 2040. This means they won’t only be carbon-neutral, but they also pledged to restore oceans and forests as a part of their sustainability efforts.

What to do moving forward

Climate week is just the beginning of what businesses can do for the environment moving forward. About 1,500 companies that week initiated zero-carbon pledges, which is three times the amount it was in 2019. Something that is crucial for all of us to remember is that we cannot do anything alone. The CEO of Walmart is also the chairman of the board of the Business Roundtable. This lobbying group includes CEOs of some of the biggest corporations in the nation. Once one makes a pledge, the others typically tend to follow. If we keep up this pace and work together, there is nothing we can’t do. That includes fighting against climate change!
