WATCH: Mayoral Candidate Nicole Malliotakis Says de Blasio is Treating New Yorkers as ‘Fools’

New York City mayoral candidate Nicole Malliotakis has set out to reform what she describes as a “deterioration of the quality of life” in New York. She joined Bold TV to discuss this effort and more. Citing the homelessness crisis, transit issues and education problems, Malliotakis said that current Mayor Bill de Blasio has ultimately neglected “city government’s basic responsibilities.”

Malliotakis denounced de Blasio’s decision to visit the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany following the shooting death of Bronx police officer Miosotis Familia. She argued that de Blasio has “set a divisive tone” for citizen-cop relations in the city, and has done little to support the New York Police Department. Though Malliotakis did credit de Blasio with establishing community police programs, she called for further action to bring New Yorkers and the NYPD together. One of Malliotakis’s efforts involves bringing K-9 units to public schools so that children can learn to respect both police forces and animals. Malliotakis wants to ensure that the police “are interacting regularly with the community.”

“The mayor of the city needs to be supportive of our NYPD, needs to give them the tools to do their jobs, and can’t tie their hands when it comes to issues,” Malliotakis said, arguing that de Blasio has overly expanded New York’s “sanctuary city” status.

Malliotakis also spoke to her ability as a Republican to govern a liberal city. She said that New York is a Democratic town “within reason,” and that its people would be willing to “pull that lever” when it comes to voting for someone who can “do a better job.” Malliotakis also pointed out that New York has had Republican mayors before.

“[De Blasio is] basically sending a message to New Yorkers that he’s trying to treat them as fools,” Malliotakis said. “That they’re going to vote for him no matter what, simply because he has the Democratic label next to his name. But the reality is, he has to deliver and do his job.”

Last week, Malliotakis posted a homelessness agenda on her website. You can read it and learn more about Malliotakis here.
