Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) said on Bold TV that she would meet Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson about the Trump administration’s policies if he is willing to “discuss substantive issues.” Watch here or on our Facebook page.
Rep. Watson Coleman is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, which turned down President Trump’s invitation for a meeting this week after hearing “nothing” following an initial meeting with the President in March. Despite the rejection, the Congresswoman says she would speak with Carson about the CBC’s concerns even though the Secretary “does not represent the sort of core value systems or concerns that are expressed throughout the black community.”
Rep. Watson Coleman also denounced the new Senate GOP health care bill draft, arguing that it will cause many to lose their jobs and health care coverage. According to the Congresswoman, the bill will also adversely affect hospitals “that already struggle with charity care.”
Rep. Watson Coleman said that New Jersey would be particularly negatively affected by the bill relative to other states. She criticized the proposal’s reduction in the number of people eligible to receive federal health care, calling the plan a “shift in wealth and priority.”
“We still needed to improve Obamacare to ensure that more people had access to health care, it was more affordable, and it was more comprehensive. So anything less than what we had is problematic for everyday working families,” Rep. Watson Coleman said.
