The Difference Between Sanitizer and Disinfectant

Photographer: Claudio Schwarz

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, hand sanitizers, disinfectants and soap saw a huge spike in demand — and for good reason. As we learned more about the virus, we discovered that it stayed on surfaces for hours or days. We’ve stayed inside for months, but the country is slowly reopening. How do we protect ourselves and others from the germs? Keri Lestage, COO of Byoplanet, chats with Bold TV about cleaning well and using the right types of disinfectants. Did you know sanitizers and disinfectants aren’t the same?

The difference between sanitizer and disinfectant

The first step in staying clean is knowing your product. Read the label, and know what it means. Sanitizers claim that they kill 99.9 percent of germs. But disinfectants kill 99.999 (and more nines) percent of germs. Do the extra nines really make a difference? Yes, disinfectant is much stronger and kills more germs than sanitizer. But neither of these products works well if you wipe them off immediately. The product’s label will tell you its needed contact time. Leaving disinfectant on the surface allows time for it to kill all the germs. Other important information on the label includes which germs it kills. Did you know many labels say they kill coronavirus? But the EPA put together a list of products that work against the most recent COVID-causing coronavirus. Read up on your products!

Keeping offices clean

Businesses now will be dedicated to keeping the office clean. So Byoplanet makes electrostatic equipment. This means that the spray device puts an electric charge on the disinfectant, which makes it like a magnet. The disinfectant then finds its way into the nooks and crannies of surfaces. What are some good tips besides disinfecting surfaces? Try to keep your distance from coworkers. Offices may not be well-ventilated, so viral particles don’t have anywhere to go. Take care as the country reopens and you venture into the world again!
