This Woman Invented An Educational Robot For Kids

PhotographerAlex Knight

Do you remember having an imaginary friend as a kid? Creating your own company seemed like a normal pastime. But kids in the age of technology may not even need make-believe companions. With inventions like ROYBI Robot, kids don’t have to use their imaginations to have someone to talk to. ROYBI is an artificial intelligence robot that helps kids learn everything from languages and vocabulary to math and science. Bold TV chats with Elnaz Sarraf, the inventor of this small creature that made Time’s 2019 Best Invention List. While it’s made for kids, adults may soon want their very own ROYBI.

The robot adapts to kids’ learning styles

Children have different rhythms and styles of learning. ROYBI adapts to the child’s pace and interests, personalizing the learning experience. The robot’s inventors discovered that critical aspects of early-childhood education were missing. They created ROYBI to help children talk more, increasing their vocabulary and helping their brain develop. The robot can even teach languages. For now, it only teaches English. But the creators are adding more languages, such as Mandarin, Spanish and Arabic.

The invention came from a passion

While inventing ROYBI, Sarraf had no clue that this little companion would soon be on the cover of Time. Education was her passion. She wanted to improve how kids learn. You may have a certain passion that drives you. You may have had a brilliant idea to make that passion into an invention. How do you know if you should pursue the idea? Sarraf believes that if you can’t think of anything that would make you happier than chasing the goal, you have the right personality to keep going. And don’t give up too soon. Patience and persistence are the keys to being an entrepreneur. So like you imagined that friend as a kid, now imagine what inventions you could design!
