Varsity Spirit Founder Encourages Coaches to ‘Stay in Touch with Students’

Sports During Quarantine

Whoever thought that sports would be canceled? COVID-19 brought the world many surprises, such as affecting the beloved world of sports. Even the Olympics are postponed until next year. Jeff Webb, founder of Varsity Brands and the Universal Cheerleading Association, says the pandemic forced him to cancel cheerleading camps and competitions across the country. He shares more with Bold TV about cheerleading the state of sports during this time.

Canceling International Cheerleading Competitions

Webb was a cheerleader at the University of Oklahoma. First-hand experience taught him how important yet unappreciated cheerleading was. It showcases athleticism and entertainment but could only be seen at football and basketball games. This unique and modern sport needed its time to shine. Webb rebranded cheerleading. Now, because of his work, there are more than 200 cheerleading competitions across the nation. The televised world championship has 70 competing countries. So how does the pandemic affect cheerleading? These competitions have been postponed or canceled until it’s safe to meet again. And the camps that once filled athletes’ summers may not happen for a while.

Young Athletes Adapting to Change

Young athletes train for competitions year-round but now face downtime. Webb encourages athletes to remain optimistic and in shape. His association is working on tools to help cheerleaders stay inspired to hone their skills. Just like athletes in other sports around the world, cheerleaders will be ready to break into competition again. Check out the conversation to hear more about how sports like cheerleading are adapting to the global pandemic.
