Are Domestic Conflicts Distracting Us From Major Foreign Policy Threats?

Claudia Rosett, a Foreign Policy Fellow at Independent Women’s Forum (IWF), talked to Bold TV about a recent IWF event, titled “Tyrants, Terrorists, and Threats to 21st Century World Order.” The event focused on post-World War II threats on the United States from both non-state and state actors, specifically Russia, China, Iran and North Korea. Rosett said the Trump administration’s underlying tone regarding foreign policy is, “finding a way that actually addresses the reality.” Rosett added President Donald Trump’s take on controversial issues, such as getting rid of the Iran Nuclear Deal, is “not consistent across the board.” However, it is based off of President Trump’s reality, where he believes “this deal will not stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons.”

According to Rosett, President Trump “has been bringing reality back to foreign policy to protect this country,” something his predecessor was unable to. “Under President Obama, we had a foreign policy that unfortunately didn’t take into account human nature and reflected some of the same approaches used in World War II.”

The IWF event also discussed the role of allies, such as NATO, and how “the US is by far the biggest spender on defense that comes out of American tax dollars,” and that our wealthy allies in Europe, such as Germany, should “step up and pay” for the amount initially promised.

In a recent speech earlier this week, Vice President Mike Pence expressed that China is “a bigger threat than Russia” because they specifically targeted farmers who constitute  PresidentTrump’s base through retaliatory tariffs. Rosett emphasized that we should focus our attention on the “interconnected network of hostilities.” She pointed to the recent joint military exercises China has been conducting with Russia, and how their affinity towards each other stems from their common enemy: “the United States.”
