With Death Of Nancy Reagan, America Loses An Embodiment Of Eloquence And Class

Americans today learned of the passing of Nancy Reagan at age 94. A woman who embodied integrity and eloquence, she served as the nation’s First Lady from 1981-1989.

Mrs. Reagan was known for her graceful gestures, her passion for the eradication of drug abuse, but above all, her admiration for her husband.

Their love was well known and documented; a love letter exchange between Ronald and Nancy epitomized the traditional, American embrace of devoted marriage. Here is an excerpt of a letter Ronald wrote to his bride:

“My Darling, here it is – our day and if we were home, we’d have a fire and ‘funnies,’ and we’d hate anyone who called or dropped in. As it is, I’m sitting here on the 6th floor beside a phony fireplace looking out at a grey, wet sky and listening to a radio play music not intended for one person alone.”

President Obama, former U.S. presidents, and current presidential candidates issued out statements and tributes regarding Mrs. Reagan’s passing.

From President Obama:

“Later, in her long goodbye with President Reagan, she became a voice on behalf of millions of families going through the depleting, aching reality of Alzheimer’s, and took on a new role, as advocate, on behalf of treatments that hold the potential and the promise to improve and save lives.”

From 2012 GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney:

“With the passing of Nancy Reagan, we say a final goodbye to the days of Ronald Reagan. With charm, grace, and a passion for America, this couple reminded us of the greatness and the endurance of the American experiment.”

From Sen. Marco Rubio:

“A true example of integrity and grace.”

From Sen. Chuck Schemer (D-NY):

“You didn’t have to be a Reagan Republican to admire and respect Nancy Reagan.”

Across the political spectrum, it is evident that Nancy, along with her husband Ronald, gave many Americans hope and inspiration, not only in marriage, but in the various avenues of life.
