We all love beautiful luscious locks. No matter short or long, big sexy hair is what we all strive to achieve. However, there may be a few things in your daily routine that are hindering you from having beautiful, healthy looking hair. It’s not too late to make a few changes and I have a few ideas for you that may help.
1. First things first, Shampoo
It’s good to always change up your shampoo. It gives your hair a pick-me-up. I myself have three shampoos that I rotate through. One of them being sulfate free, another for moisture, and the third for volume. If you are using a professional shampoo, it will more than likely be easy on your colored hair, so you can go for the moisture or volume versus for the color. And you do not need to shampoo your hair every day, even if you have oily hair. Washing too much can dry your hair out. The natural oils will help control the frizz as well. Try a dry shampoo on the second day, and if you can stand it, a third day. (Tip: try using your dry shampoo at night before you go to bed. It will help it not feel as heavy the next day, especially if you have thinner hair). If you do use dry shampoo often, you will want to rotate in a clarifying shampoo a few times a month. Or you can also mix a tablespoon or so of baking soda in the palm of your hand with your shampoo and that will remove buildup. But only two to three times a month at the most because too much and it will dry your hair out.
2. Next, Brushing
This is a very important part of your hair routine. The right brush for your hair will make all the difference. If you are having a lot of breakage it could be your brush, if you feel your hair is never fully clean, it could again be your brush. Just like you change out your tooth brush, you should be changing out your hair brush. If not properly kept clean, your brush will have product and oil buildup in the bristles. Changing out your brushes on a regular bases ensures the bristles will be straight and not bent or broken, which can cause breakage. I like to brush my hair before I shampoo, that way I get the tangles out before it’s wet, which is less stress and damage on my hair. And don’t over brush your hair, that can lead to more breakage and split-ends. Find the right kind of brush for your hair type and use it gently.
3. Last but not least, Products
Anyone who has thick bouncy looking hair will tell you they have several different products in their hair to make it look that way. I myself am always being asked: “Is that your own hair?” “How do I make my hair look like that?” “Can you cut my hair just like yours?” It’s all in the products. I have been a hairstylist for twelve years and I think products are one of the most important things, if not THE most important for your hair that you can do. They can protect your hair from heat, give your hair body, make your hair shine and stay styled all day long. If you are drying your hair and using heat styling utensils, then you most definitely need a heat protectant. I have long thick hair but I still use a humidity resistant root boost in my hair. I spray it on the root but also throughout my ends for more bounce, an oil for the shine, and of course hairspray.
