Obama Supreme Court Nominee Supported Hearing To Ban DC Handguns

The federal judge nominated by Obama to the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, has a history of supporting gun control provisions.

Garland has been a judge on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia since 1997 when he was appointed by Bill Clinton.

Daily Caller News FoundationIn 2007, a six judge-panel on this court struck down an appeal to have a re-hearing on the city law which restricted handguns even for home self-defense. He was one of four jurists who supported a rehearing.

Likewise, in 2000 Garland voted to uphold a Clinton-era regulation which allowed the FBI to hold on to gun purchase records from the for six months. This was in response to a lawsuit from the NRA which called the record keeping an, “illegal national registration of gun owners.”

At the time he was described by law professor Dave Kopel at the time as having “strong hostility to gun owner rights.”

Correction: Garland supported a hearing reconsidering a decision to strike down a handgun ban.
